The thing with Alexa is well first of all cyber security issues (I don’t trust that sort of thing personally, others might not agree and that’s their business. But I’m going into computer science, and my mom is a tech person… I’ve heard some stuff, all I’m saying) also, all of the functions are available simply by googling something, or using a cellphone or using a speaker. It seems like a lot of money to pay for functions you can already perform with the tech you have. That’s especially true on a college budget.

As an actual college student let me just give my point of view on all this stuff: (engineer at GWU)
chromcast: in reality its usually easier just to connect a computer to a tv and use that we had multiple tv’s on our floor and never used anything like the chromecast or fire stick, just easier to leave the tv with an HDMI cable and USB c dongle.
amazon dot: my friend had it…. it’s pretty useless tbh. They just stopped using altogether after a week or so. You can’t use the customization option easily with multiple people (like shopping on amazon and stuff) and without that its pretty gimmicky. The speaker were trash so we just used someones bluetooth speaker when you had parties.

General anything designed for use by multiple people isn’t gonna work so well with roommates even if you like them its just annoying.

anker speaker: great to have we always had a bunch of speakers (my friend had a super large and expensive anker one that we used a lot) definitely recommand getting one if you or your friends don’t have one. That being said its kinda obvious and you probably will figure this one out yourself.

Powerbar: Definitely need some kind of power bar, so this one seems fine. Personally, I wouldn’t get it, in my dorm last year I had very little desk space so wouldn’t want something like that if im just gonna put it on the floor. may be different for you though.

Cable management thing: Sure that would be nice i guess, its kinda annoying if you move stuff around though because its more intended for permanent cables. But it could work prettu well.

  9. Jeremy Anderson on February 14, 2019 at 11:01 pm

A lot of schools IT departments don’t actually let the chrome cast or alexa pair to the wireless on campus. So check with your school before you go out and buy one.

As a fellow college student, I disagree with this whole video except the speakers. Everything else you don’t NEED

  13. VoidKatana on February 14, 2019 at 11:06 pm

Just saying, but I had dorm friends that had both Echos and Chromecasts and couldn’t use them because those devices rely heavily on connecting to networks that just have a password, while most every college campus WiFi network requires both a username and password. Some campuses have a password-only network intended for game consoles, but you need to register the device’s MAC address, and you usually can t find one on a smart home device, and if you can, it’s a pain to set up.

I think he inserted a flash drive in the usb port in the power strip

  27. InfinitePower on February 14, 2019 at 11:18 pm

Why in the world would you recommend a Chromecast and an Alexa. The whole fun of smart things is they work together, either get the fire TV and Alexa, or Chromecast and Google home 🤦🏽‍♂️

  30. mysirius1000 on February 14, 2019 at 11:18 pm

This abject media only further isolates the students from themselves and others and creates future mental aberrations.

  31. Alex Gault on February 14, 2019 at 11:21 pm

Chromecast does not work on any dorm wifi network how many times has this been made clear? You can’t connect it to most commercial wifi networks because their authentication systems work differently from consumer systems.

  32. Votre Ami on February 14, 2019 at 11:22 pm

    S
Don’t be rude to Alexa. She may remember it.

  33. Jacob Shreve on February 14, 2019 at 11:22 pm

Chromecast and Echo do not work with the WiFi in a lot of colleges

  34. Rajat Kumar on February 14, 2019 at 11:23 pm

The chromecast and echo dot are useless.
    The rest were pretty smart

  35. eSCAPE on February 14, 2019 at 11:23 pm

the chromecast isn’t the best thing since the whole building has shared wifi thus anyone in the building can control it.

  36. ChriseysGamingHighlights on February 14, 2019 at 11:24 pm

    your soooo uglyyyy

That. Was. The best question I have ever seen anyone ask Alexa.

  39. Nathan Rodriguez on February 14, 2019 at 11:30 pm

This is a pretty good list but something to keep in mind with tech like Alexa, Chromecast, anything that requires wifi or ethernet connection is if your schools network is compatible. My university’s network is not compatible with streaming/home accesories.

Yo what backpack is that? It looks dope

  45. Corvus Hex on February 14, 2019 at 11:37 pm

A lot of colleges nowadays prevent the use of Bluetooth/wifi devices to prevents the wifi being clogged up.

  46. Nicolas Vurro on February 14, 2019 at 11:39 pm

    "need"

  47. 012chris210 on February 14, 2019 at 11:39 pm

Loved the video but wouldn’t it be better to get the google home mini as can’t you call to the chrome cast with that? Or can you do that with the Alexa dot too? Thanks (:

  48. Brian Moran on February 14, 2019 at 11:41 pm

The first two items will most likely not work on college wifi. Most colleges use business facing wifi campus wide meaning anyone on campus can connect to it.

  49. Erik pedraza on February 14, 2019 at 11:41 pm

Where did you get the book bag? It looks nice

  50. pandabutter on February 14, 2019 at 11:42 pm
